A Photo Safari with Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom
September 17–28, 2012 — Check with us for future dates
Experience your own private Africa in the epic desert landscapes of Namibia with the acclaimed photographer-writer team of Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom, on a journey from the towering cinnamon dunes of the Namib Desert to the classic wildlife gatherings at Etosha’s waterholes. Frans and Chris have traveled in and out of Africa for more than 25 years, documenting its wildlife, natural history, and conservation issues. Recently, they covered Namibia in depth for National Geographic and World Wildlife Fund. Frans and Chris have applied their personal knowledge of Namibia to design an exclusive safari that combines the most enchanting destinations, superb accommodations, and best guides for a world-class experience.

This is a private flying safari, the best way to travel across Namibia’s breathtaking landscapes. We will fly by chartered aircraft with the most experienced bush pilot in the country, adding scenic flying time between destinations. Our journey begins at one of the most remote camps in all of southern Africa--only reachable by air--with luxurious tented chalets set in a lush river oasis surrounded by the otherworldly beauty of northernmost Namibia.

We turn south to explore the celebrated Etosha National Park, with its vast, moon-white pan ringed with springs that are magnets for an ark of classic African wildlife. We’ll encounter animals intimately at an exclusive waterhole in a private concession adjacent to the park, where we’ll stay in a sumptuous tented camp. Winging south, we’ll photograph the surreal scenery of the world-renowned dunes of Sossusvlei, including a special sunrise outing to the place where Frans made his now-famous image, “Ghost Trees at Dawn,” which became an internet sensation after it appeared in the June 2011 issue of National Geographic. We’ll angle southeast to NamibRand, the largest private reserve in southern Africa, where we’ll be based at a stunning lodge set atop a dune plateau between fiery red sands dotted with mysterious “fairy circles” and the thunderhead-blue mountain ranges of Namibia’s central escarpment--a landscape that reflects the cinematic beauty of this pristine corner of Africa.

In the field, Frans will provide hands-on photographic instruction. Back in camp, Frans and Chris will share their knowledge of Africa and its wildlife through presentations and campfire chats. Special guests including wildlife filmmakers from National Geographic will add their expertise to a safari that is designed to be a unique opportunity for those keen about photography, an intimate experience for those passionate about wildlife, and an inspiring trip for those interested in conservation.

The Ultimate Namibia Safari is limited to 8 guests.
